Door repair cost in Luxembourg

These ranges are indicative and vary by provider, door type, parts and access. Security doors, front entrance doors, glazed doors and older timber doors usually cost more. Evening, night and weekend supplements are set by each provider. Ask for parts to be priced separately from labour and travel.

Before the locksmith sets off, ask for:

• the company name and address;
• the call-out fee, the price for the opening and any evening or weekend supplement, inclusive of VAT;
• whether the door will be opened without damage or whether drilling and a new cylinder may be needed, and the price of that cylinder.

Luxembourg's price-indication rules require service providers to state VAT-inclusive prices or explain how the final price will be calculated. Ask for the price in writing, for example by message, before work starts, and for an invoice afterwards. Lock opening and lock replacement ("dépanneur en serrurerie") appear on the official list of activities subject to an establishment authorisation; you can check a company in the official authorisation search.

Expect a reputable locksmith to ask you to show that you live at the address. Be cautious if a provider will not give a company name or price, insists on immediate cash payment, or drills before agreeing the price with you. Check whether your home insurance or an assistance contract covers lockouts rather than assuming it does. After a break-in, call the police on 113, photograph the damage, and ask your insurer what it needs before the lock is replaced.

Repair is usually worth considering when:

• the door leaf is sound, without warping, rot or structural cracks;
• the frame is straight and firmly fixed;
• hinges can be re-fixed or replaced like for like;
• only the cylinder, handle, strike plate or closer is worn.

Ask for a replacement quote as well when:

• the frame is rotten at the floor or sill;
• the leaf is warped and no longer closes properly;
• several hinges have failed and the leaf has sagged into the frame;
• an entrance door no longer meets your security or insulation needs.

If the repair price approaches the cost of a new door set, compare both options in writing. For an entrance door, the provider should state the product, its performance data and the fitting work included.

A cylinder is the most frequently replaced part on a lock call-out. Ask for the product reference and its security classification under the relevant European standard (EN 1303 for lock cylinders), and whether it has protection against drilling, picking or pulling. For an entrance door, ask whether a protective escutcheon is fitted, whether keys can be copied freely or only with a security card, and how many keys are included. A stronger cylinder does not help much if the door leaf, frame or lock case is weak, so ask the provider to assess the whole door. If several doors should use the same key, say so in your request. Your insurer may have its own requirements for locks on entrance doors; check your policy rather than assuming.

Door repairs and lockouts are normally invoiced at the 17% standard VAT rate. The official 3% housing regime lists doors and building locksmithing among eligible works, but only on a dwelling used as a main residence, by the owner or a tenant, that is at least 10 years old, within a cap of €50,000 of tax advantage per dwelling. Direct invoicing at 3% requires AED approval requested before the works start, on a quote above €3,000 excluding VAT. Without it, 17% is invoiced, and private individuals can only claim a refund when the claim exceeds €3,000 excluding VAT over at least six months and each invoice exceeds €1,250 excluding VAT. A one-off lockout or small repair is therefore normally invoiced at 17%. For a door replacement within a larger renovation, ask the provider which rate applies and how it will be documented.

Check:

• Business authorisation: look up the company in the official authorisation search and check that its activity matches the job.
• The right trade: lock work, joinery on the leaf and frame, glazing and historic timber doors may need different specialists.
• Diagnosis: the quote should describe the fault, the likely cause and the options, for example repair, partial replacement or full replacement.
• Parts: product references, and for cylinders the security classification.
• Warranty: ask what warranty applies to labour and to parts.
• Price: VAT-inclusive total, VAT rate, travel and any supplement shown separately.
