How to choose the right provider

Company or direct employment

A company invoices per hour with VAT and replaces absent staff. Direct employment costs at least the social minimum wage plus contributions and makes you the employer.

Write down the tasks for each visit

Rooms, ironing, windows, the inside of the oven or fridge: agree what is done each time and what is an extra, so that prices can be compared fairly.

Ask about keys and insurance

Ask how keys or access codes are kept, who pays if something breaks and whether the same person comes each time.

Cash only, no invoice and no contract: you would be employing someone undeclared.

Check minimum hours and cancellation

Agencies often set a minimum visit of 2 hours, a notice period for cancelling and a higher hourly rate for one-off visits than for weekly ones.

When to contact a provider

You want the same help every week

A fixed weekly or fortnightly slot with the same person is the usual arrangement. Agree the tasks per visit and what happens during holidays or sickness.

Before moving in or after moving out

A one-off deep clean before moving in, or an end-of-tenancy clean before the inspection (état des lieux), is quoted separately from regular cleaning.

Help at home for an older relative

Cleaning services cover housework, ironing and sometimes shopping. Personal care, such as washing or medication, is the work of a home care network (réseau d'aides et de soins).

You prefer to employ someone directly

You then become an employer: a written contract, declaration to the CCSS and at least the social minimum wage. An agency invoices you instead and handles contracts, replacements and insurance.

What to compare in quotes

  • Say how many hours and how often, list the tasks for each visit and ask whether products, travel and a replacement during absences are included.
  • The hourly rate including VAT, the minimum visit length and whether travel and cleaning products are charged.
  • The task list for each visit (rooms, kitchen, bathrooms, ironing, windows) and what counts as an extra.
  • The notice for cancelling a visit, cover during holidays or sickness, and how keys are handled.

Luxembourg checks before you hire

Company or direct employment

A cleaning company invoices you and employs the staff. If you employ someone yourself, Guichet.lu describes a simplified procedure for households: a written contract, declaration to the CCSS and at least the social minimum wage.

Tax allowance for household help

The allowance for household expenses (abattement pour frais de domesticité) can reach €5,400 a year when the staff are declared to social security and mainly do housework in your home, whether you or a company employs them.

VAT on home cleaning

Cleaning in private homes is invoiced at the reduced 8 % VAT rate. Compare offers on the price including VAT.

Keys and insurance

Ask how keys or access codes are kept, whether the same person comes each time and which insurance covers breakage or damage in your home.

FAQ

How much does a house cleaner cost per hour in Luxembourg?

Agencies publish around €31–34 per hour including 8 % VAT for weekly visits, €33–35 every two weeks and €37–41 for a one-off visit. Travel and products can be extra, and a visit often lasts at least 2 hours.

Can I deduct the cost of a cleaner from my taxes?

The allowance for household expenses (abattement pour frais de domesticité) can reach €5,400 a year, at most €450 a month and no more than the actual cost, when the staff are declared to social security and mainly do housework in your home, whether you or a company employs them.

How do I declare a cleaner I employ myself?

Private households can use a simplified procedure described on Guichet.lu: a written contract, declaration to the CCSS, pay at least equal to the social minimum wage and contributions calculated by the CCSS. You then have employer obligations, for example for sick leave and notice.

Which VAT rate applies to home cleaning?

Cleaning in private homes is invoiced at the reduced 8 % VAT rate in Luxembourg. Office and building cleaning is invoiced at the standard 17 % rate.
