Common jobs and project types

Use this list to decide whether you need a specialist tiler, a broader company, or several trades working together.

  • Floor tiling in living areas, kitchens and hallways
  • Bathroom wall and floor tiling
  • Walk-in showers with waterproofing under the tiles
  • Large-format tiles and porcelain stoneware
  • Removing old tiles and preparing the substrate
  • Kitchen splashbacks and mosaic
  • Terrace and balcony tiles
  • Regrouting, silicone joints and broken-tile repairs

How to choose the right provider

Ask for photos of similar jobs

Large formats, mosaic, walk-in showers and outdoor tiling are different skills. Ask for recent references of the same type.

A shower quote that says nothing about the substrate, the slope or the waterproofing.

Check what the price per m² covers

Compare labour, adhesive, grout, trims, silicone, tile removal, levelling, waste and VAT line by line. Tiles are often bought separately.

Ask how the substrate is checked

The tiler should check flatness, moisture and the age of the screed, especially with underfloor heating, and say who corrects it if needed.

Agree the order of the trades

In a renovation, plumbing, electrics and screed come first, then the tiles, then sanitaryware and painting. Confirm drying times and the start date in writing.

When to contact a provider

The bathroom is being redone

When pipes move or the shower becomes walk-in, book the tiler together with the plumber: drain, slope and waterproofing are laid before the tiles.

You want a new tiled floor

Large rooms, underfloor heating and large formats need a flat, dry screed. The tiler checks levels and moisture before giving a firm price.

Tiles are cracked or joints leak

Loose tiles, crumbling grout or mould along the shower often mean water behind the tiles. A tiler can tell whether regrouting is enough or the area has to be stripped.

Outdoor terrace or balcony

Outdoor tiles must be frost-resistant and laid with a slope and expansion joints. A balcony above a living space also needs waterproofing.

What to compare in quotes

  • Give the floor and wall areas in m², the tile format and whether old tiles must come off; check that substrate preparation, waterproofing and trims are priced.
  • Labour per m² for floor and wall separately, with the tile format, laying pattern and cutting allowance stated.
  • Removal of old tiles, substrate repair, levelling, waterproofing, trims, silicone joints and rubble disposal priced line by line.
  • Who buys the tiles and adhesive, the delivery date, drying times before use and the guarantee on the work.

Luxembourg checks before you hire

3 % VAT on work in your home

Tiling in a home used as a main residence can be invoiced at the super-reduced 3 % VAT rate: for a renovation, the building must be at least ten years old when work starts, and the approval is requested from the AED before the work begins. The VAT advantage is capped at €50,000 per home.

Waterproofing in wet areas

In a walk-in shower or on a balcony, a waterproofing layer goes under the tiles. Ask which system is used, who lays it and whether the tiler's guarantee covers it.

Co-owned buildings

In an apartment, read the co-ownership rules (règlement de copropriété) before replacing a floor: some require impact-sound insulation under hard floor coverings or set the hours for noisy work.

Business authorisation and insurance

Before work starts, ask for the autorisation d'établissement covering tiling and for the civil liability insurance certificate.

FAQ

How much does a tiler cost in Luxembourg?

Laying standard floor tiles costs around €35–50 per m² excluding VAT and tiles, large formats €50–70 per m² and wall tiles €45–60 per m². Removing old floor tiles adds about €18–30 per m². Small jobs are often billed by the hour, around €45–55 excluding VAT, plus travel.

Does the 3 % VAT rate apply to tiling?

It can, for a home used as a main residence. For a renovation the building must be at least ten years old when work starts, and the approval is requested from the AED before the work begins. Otherwise the standard 17 % rate applies.

Who is responsible for waterproofing a walk-in shower?

Agree it before work starts. The waterproofing membrane under the tiles is usually laid by the tiler and the drain fitted by the plumber; the quote should say who supplies and lays each part and how the joints at walls and drain are sealed.

What should I send for a tiling quote?

The floor and wall areas in m², the tile format if already chosen, photos of the current floor or walls, whether old tiles must come off, any underfloor heating, access to the site and your preferred dates.

Useful cost signals

Floor tiling, standard format (labour per m²)

35 € - 50 €

Laying only, excluding VAT and tiles, for formats under 60×60 cm. Adhesive, grout and substrate preparation are quoted on top.

Large-format floor tiles, 60×60 cm and more (labour per m²)

50 € - 70 €

Excluding VAT and tiles. Large formats need a very flat substrate; levelling is priced separately.

Wall tiling (labour per m²)

45 € - 60 €

Excluding VAT and tiles, on plasterboard or concrete. Removing old wall tiles and waterproofing in showers are extra.
