How to choose the right provider
Gardener or landscaper?
A gardener maintains an existing garden: mowing, hedges, pruning, clean-ups. A new layout, paving or a terrace is landscaping work, quoted as a project.
Agree the visit schedule
A maintenance contract should list the number of visits, their length and what each includes (mowing, edges, hedges, leaves), and what is billed on top.
Ask about green waste
Some gardeners include taking the cuttings away; others bill it per load or leave it for the commune's green-waste collection. Ask before comparing prices.
Ask for an invoice and the business authorisation
A declared gardener holds an autorisation d'établissement and invoices with VAT. Cash work without an invoice leaves you without recourse if something is damaged.

When to contact a provider
The lawn needs regular mowing
From about April to October a lawn is usually cut every one to two weeks. A contract with fixed visits costs less per visit than calling a gardener each time.
Hedges along the boundary
Long or tall hedges need a long-reach trimmer and a trailer for the cuttings. Plan heavy cutting outside the bird nesting season.
A garden that has been left
After a season without care, a one-off clean-up (long grass, cutting back, clearing) brings the garden to a state you can maintain or hand over to a contract.
You are away or let the property
A contract with a fixed scope and visit schedule keeps the garden in shape without arranging each visit, and avoids disagreement about what a tidy garden means.

Trees and protected areas
Felling a large tree, or work in a green zone or on protected species, can need approval from the commune or the Administration de la nature et des forêts (ANF). Check before booking the work.
Green waste
Ask whether cuttings are taken away and how this is billed. Otherwise they go to the commune's green-waste collection or a recycling centre.
Insurance for work at height
For pruning from a ladder or felling, ask for the liability insurance certificate and check that it covers tree work, not only gardening at ground level.
