Heat-loss calculation in writing

An installer who proposes a heat-pump size without a written heat-loss calculation is guessing. A correctly-sized unit runs quieter, lasts longer and qualifies more cleanly for Klimabonus.

Right system type for your building

Air-water suits well-insulated detached and semi-detached houses with outdoor space. Geothermal fits larger plots and high annual heat demand where the drilling payback (12 to 15 years longer than air-water) is justified by stable ground-loop COP. Hybrid gas/heat-pump makes sense for older urban townhouses awaiting insulation upgrades — the gas burner covers the coldest hours.

Noise class and outdoor-unit placement

Ask for the sound-power level (Lw) in dB(A) from the datasheet, not just the perceived sound-pressure number. Premium air-water units sit at Lw 52 to 58 dB(A); anything above 62 dB(A) triggers neighbour complaints in Luxembourg's typical lot spacing. Confirm the unit can run in silent mode overnight without a performance penalty.

A quote that quotes only sound pressure at 10 m distance (intentionally low) without the Lw figure is hiding the number you need for a neighbour complaint.

How much does a heat pump cost installed in Luxembourg?

Air-water heat pumps run €12 000 to €18 000 installed. Geothermal sits between €20 000 and €35 000 including drilling. Klimabonus 2026 can refund €10 000 on air-water and €12 000 on geothermal, bringing net cost to roughly €6 000–9 000 and €10 000–23 000 respectively. Condition: the installer must be Klima-Agence registered.

Does a heat pump work in an older, poorly insulated house?

It can, but performance drops sharply below a minimum insulation level. Order a heat-loss calculation first. If the figure exceeds roughly 100 W/m², insulate the roof and upgrade the windows before installing — otherwise the compressor will run on electric backup at cost parity with oil.

Will I need to upgrade my electrical panel?

Often yes. A heat pump adds 2 to 4 kW of continuous draw and typically needs a dedicated circuit. If your main fuse is 40 A or less, expect a €1 200 to €2 500 panel upgrade plus Creos paperwork. Ask the heat-pump installer to coordinate with a licensed electrician on the same schedule.

Will the outdoor unit bother my neighbours?

Modern inverter units run at 45–55 dB(A) at one metre — roughly a whisper at night. Luxembourg municipal noise rules typically cap 35 dB(A) at the property line between 22:00 and 06:00. Place the unit at least two metres from the boundary, use rubber mounts and schedule the compressor to down-modulate overnight.
