Every commercial plumber in Luxembourg must hold one. Ask for the number and check it on guichet.public.lu before signing a quote above €500.

If the plumber can't produce the autorisation number on request, stop and find another provider. No legitimate installer will hesitate.

Ask for professional liability insurance

RC Pro should cover water-damage claims up to at least €500 000. For structural work, decennial liability is separate and mandatory.

A verbal 'of course we're insured' with no document is not proof. Get the certificate on paper or PDF, dated for the current year.

Insist on an itemised quote

Labour and materials must be split line by line. Flat-fee quotes above €500 make it impossible to challenge overruns or swap a component for a cheaper one.

A single line reading 'plumbing works — €X,XXX' is not a quote. It's a placeholder. Ask for the breakdown before you sign.

Decennial liability on structural work

For new bathrooms, risers and connections to the sanitary stack, the plumber owes ten years of liability. Ask which insurer carries it.

How fast can a plumber reach me?

On business days in Luxembourg-Ville and the centre, most verified plumbers arrive within two hours for flagged emergencies. Further out — north of Mersch or east of Grevenmacher — plan for three to four hours. Overnight and weekend response depends on the individual provider's rota; ask for a written arrival window rather than a vague 'as soon as possible'.

Is the weekend surcharge standard?

Yes. A 50 to 80 percent surcharge on the hourly rate is standard for evenings, weekends and public holidays in Luxembourg. Some providers charge a flat call-out fee on top, typically €100 to €200. Always ask whether the surcharge applies from 18:00 or 20:00, as practice varies, and request the VAT-inclusive total before the plumber starts work.

How do I verify a plumber's licence?

Ask for the autorisation d'établissement number, then search it on guichet.public.lu under 'Rechercher une autorisation d'établissement'. The tool returns the company name, trading address and authorised activity. A plumber who refuses to share the number, or whose entry doesn't cover sanitary installation, is not a legal option for your job.

When does decennial liability apply?

Decennial liability covers structural installation work for ten years from reception: new sanitary risers, plumbing embedded in walls or slabs of a bathroom renovation, and gas connections. It does not cover a simple tap swap or drain unblocking. For any project above €5 000, ask the installer to name the insurer and deliver the certificate before the first invoice.
