Manufacturer approval for cars under warranty

If the car is still under manufacturer warranty, confirm the garage either holds the brand approval or follows the manufacturer service schedule using equivalent-quality parts, as EU Block Exemption requires.

A garage that tells you servicing outside their network voids your warranty for every brand is misinforming you — that claim is contrary to EU rules.

Diagnostic equipment on site

Ask whether the workshop has a generic OBD-II scanner and manufacturer-specific tooling for your brand. Modern cars cannot be serviced properly without coded parts and module updates.

A garage that wants to replace a sensor without first reading the fault code is guessing — insist on a diagnostic before any parts are ordered.

Written quote before work starts

Ask for a written estimate that separates labour hours, parts and disposal fees. In Luxembourg this is standard practice for any repair above roughly €200.

Verbal estimates that move more than 20% on the final invoice without a mid-job call for approval are not acceptable.

Old-parts-retention policy

A trustworthy garage offers to show or return the replaced parts (brake discs, alternator, timing belt). This proves the part was actually changed and is especially useful for SNCT repair verification.

A garage that refuses to show the old parts, citing vague disposal rules, is one to avoid.

When is SNCT due for my car?

For a new private car registered in Luxembourg, the first SNCT inspection is due 3.5 years after first registration. After that, it is every 2 years until the car turns 10, and annual from age 10 onwards. Commercial vehicles are inspected annually from the start. Is an SNCT pre-check worth the cost?

For most cars older than five years, yes. A pre-check at an independent garage costs €45-€85 and catches common fail points — worn tyres, headlight aim, brake imbalance, handbrake travel. A failed SNCT means a re-test fee plus the repairs you needed anyway, so the pre-check usually pays for itself on the first avoided retest.

What happens if I fail SNCT?

You receive a defect list and a time window to fix the issues before a re-test. Minor defects usually give you two months; major defects require repair before returning the vehicle to the road. The re-test is charged separately. Bring the repair invoice to the re-test so the inspector can verify the specific work.

Can any garage prepare my car for SNCT?

Any garage holding an autorisation d'établissement can prepare a car for SNCT, as long as it has the right equipment — brake tester, headlight aligner, suspension tester or access to one. Dealer networks and larger independents all handle SNCT prep routinely.
